Youth Races

Run off that endless energy.

Even when Grandma’s Weekend is not upon us, we are working, along with community organizations, toward inspiring a love of running in our local youth.


Wednesday Night at the Races

Wednesday Night at the Races has become a summer tradition for hundreds of families throughout the Northland. This youth race series is held on six consecutive Wednesday evenings in July and August, and draws an average of over 400 children per night.

August 9: Denfeld High School, Public Schools Stadium
August 16: Hermantown High School, Corey Veech Memorial Field
August 23: Superior High School, NBC Spartan Sports Complex
August 30: Wade Stadium, year-end run & picnic

Registration

Registration is from 5:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. each evening of the series. These races are free.

Start Time

The youth races will start promptly at 6:00 p.m. beginning with the Courage Duluth wheelchair division (when offered) followed by the youngest age group and ending with the oldest children.

Age groups and distances:

Courage Duluth wheelchair division – 1/8 mile
4 & under – 1/8 mile
5 & 6 years old – 1/8 mile
7 & 8 years old – 1/4 mile
9 & 10 years old – 1/4 mile
11 & 12 years old – 1/2 mile
13 & 14 years old – 1/2 mile

Everyone’s a champion at this event! Each week children will receive a ribbon upon completion of their race.

Whipper Snapper Races

Age level: 14 and under

Date: June 16, 2017

Join us for the Whipper Snapper Races at the Bayfront Festival Park on Duluth’s Waterfront. These races are free and open to everyone.

Children will run short dashes. All participants receive a ribbon at the completion of their race.

Registration begins at noon and races start at 2:00 p.m.

Start time

The youth races will start promptly at 2:00 p.m. beginning with the youngest age group and ending with the oldest children.

4 & under – 1/8 mile
5 & 6 years old – 1/8 mile
7 & 8 years old – 1/4 mile
9 & 10 years old – 1/4 mile
11 & 12 years old – 1/2 mile
13 & 14 years old – 1/2 mile

*Distances may be shortened due to hot weather conditions


Park Point 5-Miler

Age level: 14 and under

Date: Thursday, July 13

The Park Point 5-Miler kids races are held in conjunction with the Park Point 5-Miler—Minnesota’s oldest road race. The children’s races are free and open to kids ages 14 and under.

The race will take place at the end of Park Point near the main beach house.

Registration for the Park Point Youth Races is from 3:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. These races are free. We encourage participants to plan extra traveling time into their schedules in case the Aerial Lift Bridge goes up.

Start time

The youth races will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. beginning with the youngest age group and ending with the oldest children.

4 & under – 1/8 mile
5 & 6 years old – 1/8 mile
7 & 8 years old – 1/4 mile
9 & 10 years old – 1/4 mile
11 & 12 years old – 1/2 mile
13 & 14 years old – 1/2 mile

Saturday Morning at the Races

Age level: 14 and Under

Length: Distances vary based on age from approx. 1/8 mile, 1/4 mile and 1/2 mile

Registration starts at 9 a.m.; Races start at 10 a.m.

If winter weather has you pursuing indoor options to keep your kids active, join us for “Saturday Morning at the Races.”

Children ages 14 and under are invited to attend, completely free of charge.  In addition to participating in a fun run around the indoor track, kids will enjoy meeting mascots from the respective schools, as well as Duluth Huskies mascot “Harley D. Huskie!  Children receive a free t-shirt at each race! *Please note that outside shoes must be removed before entering the track area.  No one, including parents, will be permitted entrance in street shoes.  


Essentia Fit-n-Fun Run

Age level: Duluth 3rd to 5th graders

Length: Quarter of a mile

Date: May 17, 2017

The Essentia Health Fit-n-Fun Run is held each May for third, fourth and fifth graders attending Duluth Public Elementary Schools. Each year nearly 2,000 students run a quarter of a mile in celebration of the end of the school year and the hard work they put forth in their physical education classes.

At the end of their race, students are presented with a ribbon and commemorative T-shirt.

The Fit-n-Fun Run is presented by Essentia Health. Additional support is provided by Duluth Public Schools, Advantage Emblem & Screen Printing, the Young Athletes Foundation and Grandma’s Marathon.
