Live Entertainment Rocks Under the Big Top Tent

Each year one event draws together thousands of people from several different walks of life: Duluth’s Grandma’s Marathon. The race unites all of these people during the three days that Grandma’s Marathon spans.

And when the runners aren’t on the course, another aspect connects everyone – the live music. Every year on race weekend a remarkable line up of musicians provide entertainment for the racers and spectators alike. This year is no different.

The Big Top Tent in Canal Park is the place to see and hear all of the action. Grandma’s Marathon Hall of Famer and fan favorite, G.B. Leighton, will be returning this year along with some returning bands and others making their first appearances at the event.

There’s some great news for those fans attending Friday night’s show. The cover charge that had been in place from previous has been lifted, so music from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. is absolutely free.

Another exciting change for 2013 is the addition of two new craft beer options. Superior Beverages will be providing a pair of Goose Island’s most popular brews – India Pale Ale and 312 Urban Wheat Ale.

The festivities begin Friday at 7 p.m. with Big Wave Dave & The Ripples getting the party started. Minneapolis-based Rogue Valley then takes the stage 8:15 p.m., followed by Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles.

The Friday evening set concludes at 11:30 p.m. with Duluth’s Sarah Krueger on a smaller, more intimate stage. Sarah will be joined by some of her musician friends for a set not to be missed.

Again, Friday’s event is FREE and open to anyone age 21 and older.

Under the Big Top Tent on Saturday, a full day of music gets started at 11:30 a.m. with local favorite Mynx. They will entertain the crowd until 1 p.m. when Big Wave Dave & the Ripples with Sarah Krueger take over followed at 2:30 p.m. by Rhino.

Then, G.B. Leighton takes the stage at 4 p.m. Their music will entertain the runners, volunteers and spectators who are winding down from their race-day activities. The Saturday early performances are all free of charge and will last until 5:15 p.m.

Saturday night will be the final set and the big showcase of the weekend. Each group will be given a 90-minute time slot providing the final touches to a busy race weekend. Tickets are $8 and the show is open to everyone 21 and older.

Big Wave Dave & the Ripples with Sarah Krueger will kick off the evening at 8 p.m. Rhino will be playing at 9:45 p.m. and G. B. Leighton will be closing the evening with their second show of the weekend beginning at 11:30 p.m. Enthusiasts will not want to miss seeing this final live performance of marathon weekend.

So, no matter what type of music gets you going, don’t miss the 2013 Grandma’s Marathon live music offered throughout the weekend under the Big Top Tent in Canal Park.
