On behalf of the Grandma's Marathon staff and board of directors, I extend a huge thank you to all those who helped make the 35th anniversary celebration of Grandma’s Marathon such a success! We simply could not host the races and events that we do without the support of our volunteer team of 5,000 community members, our committed sponsors and the thousands of dedicated participants and fans. Thank you!
We certainly had a wonderful milestone race, with a closer-than-ever men’s champion finish of Grandma’s Marathon, and eight men breaking the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon course record – what excitement at the finish line!
Congratulations to everyone who participated in Grandma's Marathon, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and the William A. Irvin 5K. All of the races saw many outstanding performances including many new personal records.
With the 35th anniversary race behind us, plans are well underway for the 36th annual race weekend, which will be held June 14 - 16, 2012. Registration for the June 16, 2012 Grandma’s Marathon is now available exclusively on our website at www.grandmasmarathon.com. For more information regarding registration dates for the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon and the William A. Irvin 5K, please also visit our website.
In July, Grandma’s Marathon and the Young Athletes Foundation hosted the 40th running of northern Minnesota’s oldest road race – the Park Point 5-Miler. The race drew more than 500 participants and raised thousands of dollars for the Young Athletes Foundation.
We also hosted our annual Wednesday Night at the Races series, a program that is made possible by the Young Athletes Foundation. This event has become a great tradition for families throughout the Northland, and we look forward to hosting it each year. Races for children 14 and under were held each Wednesday night at varying locations for six weeks in July and August. The final race at Park Point featured a summer-end picnic catered by Texas Roadhouse as well as t-shirts for the kids. Thanks for joining us this year!
As we wrap up 2011’s events, we look forward with excitement to hosting the 2012 and 2013 USA Men’s and Women’s Half Marathon Championships! I wish you all a safe and enjoyable rest of the summer and we hope to see you in 2012!
