maurices has been one of the mainstay businesses in Duluth for more than 80 years, but its impact on the fashion industry and on the community goes way beyond this northern Minnesota town.
What started in 1931 as a small women’s fashion shop in downtown Duluth, has grown into an operation consisting of 850 specialty stores across the U.S. and Canada. maurices, which today employs over 6,500 people and is owned by Ascena Retail Group, inc., continues to inspire young women to find their style, with affordable fashions in sizes 1-24. Whether it's jeans or jewelry, maurices offers everything a girl needs to fill her closet with the latest trends. maurices commitment to offering the highest quality merchandise mirrors their mission to be good corporate citizens by giving back to community organizations throughout the nation.
maurices prides themselves on their philanthropic values which truly connects them with their customers and the communities that they serve. They give back by encouraging volunteerism, supporting associates with matching contributions for the work they do in their community and also by offering a flexible work environment. maurices Marketing Manager Monica Hendrickson states, “It makes sense for us to step up and be a leader by supporting various non-profits in different ways. This sense of caring, coupled with a sense of ownership and accountability, allows us to foster an environment of empowerment to make a difference which defines the maurices culture.”
On a national level, maurices is a proud National Team Partner supporting the American Cancer Society and also ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®). "It is important to maurices that the dollars we raise through cause marketing efforts help the communities where our team members live, work and play,” says Hendrickson.
maurices has also helped other various organizations in Duluth, such as the Young Athletes Foundation, Animal Allies and Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank, achieve success. “When Grandma's Marathon became a nonprofit organization in 1987, maurices was one of the first businesses to help us out by becoming a presenting sponsor. Their continued support as a major sponsor has been instrumental in the growth of Grandma's Marathon and supporting events. They have helped us every step of the way,” says Executive Director Scott Keenan.
maurices associates, along with their friends and families, staff Grandma’s Marathon 21-mile water station on London Road. They greet runners with cheers and smiling faces at a crucial point in the race for the runners.
"Grandma's Marathon is a time when the whole city comes together to cheer on our friends, neighbors and runners throughout the world," says Hendrickson. "We have over 50 associates who run in the marathon and we want to cheer them all on! We have so much fun with the maurices team, the runners and the terrific neighbors on our mile. We are proud to support such a great community event!"
