Nation’s Fastest 4G LTE Network Includes Twin Ports Area for this Year’s Race

Each year Grandma’s Marathon Weekend crowns the fastest marathon, half-marathon and 5K participants over the Duluth area course. This year, the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network joins the race in the Duluth area for those with Verizon 4G LTE capable smartphones, tablets and mobile hotspots to share all the action via video, email or social media sites. Verizon launched its 4G LTE network in the Twin Ports last December – just one of the more than 200 markets across the country with the company’s high-speed broadband wireless data service.

Fitness and Finish Line Services for Runners

Verizon’s street team of wireless experts will be showcasing the latest smartphones, tablets and fitness accessories at the Plaza outside the DECC Friday such as the MOTOACTV™ by Motorola which incorporates music, GPS tracking, website application and multisport functionality. When paired by Bluetooth with a Motorola smartphone, users can see incoming calls, text messages and calendar appointments and answer on the run.

Verizon is also the presenting sponsor of the results tent located in the runner's recovery area at the finish line. There, volunteers help runners look up their results after the race, and print out a receipt for the runner that contains their split times along the course and their finishing time.

You'll also see many Verizon team members out on the course either running, volunteering at the company's 20-mile water station, or helping with race course communications.

Race Course Communications for 20 Years

For the last 20 years, Verizon has brought the latest wireless communications technology to Grandma's Marathon Weekend, and this year is no exception with the leading Global standard in high-speed broadband networks – Verizon’s 4G LTE. In the early 1990's, Grandma's Marathon was one of the first races to offer the use of Verizon Wireless phones to runners after they finished the race so they could call loved ones anywhere in the world. A few years later, the leading wireless company helped improve race course communications by providing nearly 70 wireless phones for race personnel to use throughout the event weekend.

“Verizon’s long-time commitment to our event is tremendous. From the communication services the company donates to the time and energy their employees put into making Grandma's Marathon a success – we are so appreciative of their support,” said Keenan.
