Start Line Information
The 2021 Fitger’s 5K will be conducted in a wave start format to comply with state health and social distancing guidelines.
Waves of 45 participants will begin at 7:00 a.m. and be separated by 5 minutes each. The last wave will start at 8:45 a.m.
Participants MUST compete in the wave time selected at registration.
NOTE: The wave style start outlined above is based on current health guidelines to maintain appropriate social distancing throughout the event.
This year’s race will start just outside the Kitchi Gammi Club and travel eastward toward 21st Avenue East on Superior Street, London Road, and South Street.
Participants will then turn around and travel along the Lakewalk before finishing near the historic Fitger’s Lakefront Hotel in downtown Duluth.
Free parking for the event will be available in the parking ramp located next to Fitger’s.

The Young Athletes Foundation and Grandma’s Marathon have worked with the Duluth Police Department to minimize traffic disturbances during our event.
The following closures and traffic advisories will be in effect from 6:30-9:30 a.m. on the morning of Saturday, April 17, 2021.
- Superior Street will be closed between 8th Ave. East and 10th Ave. East
- London Road will be closed between 10th Ave. East and 12th Ave. East
- 15th Ave. East and 20th Ave. East will be closed between London Road and South Street
- South Street will be open for westbound traffic only between 16th Ave. East and 19th Ave. East
- 21st Avenue East will be closed south of London Road, except for local Water Street traffic.
- The on- and off-ramps from I-35 at 21st Ave. East will be closed
NOTE: Except for the areas listed above, London Road and Superior Street will remain open for traffic in both directions on race day. Motorists are asked to use caution, however, as participants will be in the eastbound shoulder during a portion of the event. The Lakewalk will also remain open during the entire event, but the public is asked to be aware of the race in progress.
No pets, motor vehicles, bicycles, handcycles, hand-cranked wheelchairs, roller skis, inline skates, or unregistered participants are allowed on the racecourse.
Baby joggers and strollers are allowed at YAF events but must start in the back of the corral.
Pushrim wheelchair competitors, duo teams, and other adaptive athletes are encouraged to participate but must follow all Wheelchair & Adaptive Program Guidance. Adaptive athletes are asked to contact Grandma’s Marathon prior to registering so that we can provide all reasonable accommodations.
If you are registered for the walk division, you MUST walk the entire distance. No running is allowed. Awards are given on an honor system.
No age division or overall awards will be given out for the walk or run division for the 2021 Fitger’s 5k.
