Run off that endless energy.

Even when Grandma’s Weekend is not upon us, we are working, along with community organizations, toward inspiring a love of running in our local youth.


YAF Winter Challenge

Keep kids healthy and active during January and February at home. Kids can complete 3 challenge cards filled with easy at-home activities. Each card partners with one of the three area colleges, UMD, CSS, and UWS. Once they complete the challenge cards at the end of the challenge, they can be redeemed for a prize.

Kids also have the opportunity to log their mileage during January and February to complete a virtual marathon over the course of those 2 months.

Registration: Online registration opens December 15th

Saturday Morning at the Races

If winter weather has you pursuing indoor options to keep your kids active, join us for “Saturday Morning at the Races.”

2021 Schedule

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we will not be hosting Saturday Morning at the Races this year. Saturday Morning at the Races in 2021 has been replaced with the new virtual program YAF Winter Challenge. 

 


Wednesday Night at the Races

Wednesday Night at the Races has become a summer tradition for hundreds of families throughout the Northland. This youth race series is held on five consecutive Wednesday evenings in July and August and draws an average of over 400 children per night.

2020 Schedule:
At this time, we will not be hosting the 2020 Wednesday Night at the Races youth series. However, events could be added at a later date dependent on the rapidly changing circumstances surrounding COVID-19. 

Registration: from 5:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. each evening of the series. These races are free.

Start Time: promptly at 6:00 p.m. beginning with the wheelchair & adaptive division (when offered) followed by the youngest age group and ending with the oldest children.

Age groups and distances:
Wheelchair & adaptive division – 1/8 mile
4 & under – 1/8 mile
5 & 6 years old – 1/8 mile
7 & 8 years old – 1/4 mile
9 & 10 years old – 1/4 mile
11 to 14 years old – 1/2 mile

Everyone’s a champion at this event! Each week children will receive a ribbon upon completion of their race.


Park Point 5-Miler

2021 Date: July 15, 2021

The Park Point 5-Miler kids races are held in conjunction with the Park Point 5-Miler—Minnesota’s oldest road race. The children’s races are free and open to kids ages 14 and under. The race will take place at the end of Park Point near the main beach house.

Registration: for the Park Point Youth Races is from 3:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. These races are free. We encourage participants to plan extra traveling time into their schedules in case the Aerial Lift Bridge goes up.

Start time: promptly at 5:30 p.m. beginning with the youngest age group and ending with the oldest children.

Age level: 14 and Under

Age groups & distances:
4 & under – 1/8 mile
5 & 6 years old – 1/8 mile
7 & 8 years old – 1/4 mile
9 & 10 years old – 1/4 mile
11 & 12 years old – 1/2 mile
13 & 14 years old – 1/2 mile

*Distances may be shortened due to hot weather conditions


Essentia Fit-n-Fun Run

Age level: Duluth 3rd to 5th graders
Length: Quarter of a mile
Date: TBA
Location: Malosky Stadium at University of Minnesota-Duluth

The Essentia Health Fit-n-Fun Run is held each May for third, fourth, and fifth graders attending Duluth Public Elementary Schools. Each year nearly 2,000 students run a quarter of a mile in celebration of the end of the school year and the hard work they put forth in their physical education classes.

At the end of their race, students are presented with a ribbon and commemorative T-shirt.

The Fit-n-Fun Run is presented by Essentia Health. Additional support is provided by Duluth Public Schools, Advantage Emblem & Screen Printing, University of Minnesota-Duluth, the Young Athletes Foundation and Grandma’s Marathon.


Whipper Snapper Races

Date: June 18, 2021

Join us for the Whipper Snapper Races at the Bayfront Festival Park on Duluth’s Waterfront. These races are FREE and open to everyone. Children will run short dashes. All participants receive a ribbon at the completion of their race.

Registration: begins at noon and races start at 2:00 p.m.
Start time: The youth races will start promptly at 2:00 p.m. beginning with the youngest age group and ending with the oldest children.
Age level: 14 and Under

Age groups & distances:
4 & under – 1/8 mile
5 & 6 years old – 1/8 mile
7 & 8 years old – 1/4 mile
9 & 10 years old – 1/4 mile
11 & 12 years old – 1/2 mile
13 & 14 years old – 1/2 mile

North End Nightmare 5K & Spider Dash

The Spider Dash will be held in conjunction with the North End Nightmare 5K at the North End Spooktacular!

Free for kids  14 and under. All participants in the Spider Dash will receive a commemorative tote bag…perfect for trick-or-treating!
