Carbon Offsets from NCX

NCX is proud to partner with Grandma’s Marathon to offset travel emissions for race participants. This optional and additional registration cost will offset the climate impact of your travel based on your starting point and method of transport using carbon credits from NCX, the Natural Capital Exchange. Payments made for carbon offsets during registration go directly to support family forest landowners across Minnesota. Here’s how it works.

Giving Back to Local Communities

NCX and Grandma’s Marathon have partnered to create neighbor-to-neighbor climate impact by allowing race participants to invest back into local communities with carbon credits sourced from surrounding local forests. NCX partners with landowners of all sizes, ensuring families are paid to prevent harvesting their forests for immediate, verifiable, and permanent climate impact.

What are Forest Carbon Offsets?

As participating forests grow, the trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and store it within their growing biomass: trunk, branches, leaves, and root systems. Forest carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), representing the emissions which are avoided to compensate for emissions occurring elsewhere, like fuel burned to transport race participants. NCX uses unmatched rigor, data, and technology to ensure the highest quality carbon credits. To learn more about their innovative approach, visit ncx.com.

Fitger's 5K History

The Fitger’s 5K began in 1990 and over more than three decades has now become Duluth’s premier spring running event.

The 3.1-mile race traditionally starts and finishes in front of the historic Fitger’s building. The scenic race course takes participants through downtown Duluth and Canal Park.

Below are the all-time Fitger’s 5K race records and winners from each year. NOTE: Some early records are incomplete and our staff is working to retrieve those dating back to 1990.
