What To Expect at the Grandma’s Marathon Finish Line
We want to help you prepare for your best finish! The racecourse is set up perfectly for PRs and is always a top Boston qualifying track, but don’t let that get you in trouble. Listen to your body and be conscious of the conditions. It is far more enjoyable to take in the north shore of Lake Superior and focus on just having fun than it is to push too hard for a fast finish time.
Among the first things you’ll find after you cross the line are Dasani water and the medical tent, with members of our medical team prepped and ready. With Essentia Health as a major sponsor, we have one of the best coordinated medical teams in road-racing. They’re ready to take care of any issue a runner may experience after a marathon. However, if you only require blister treatment or other minor self-care issues, there is a smaller medical tent to help, just a bit farther from the line in the post-finish area.
To avoid spending time in the medical tent after a marathon, one of the best preparations is to educate yourself on Exercise Associated Collapse (EAC), the most common condition seen by our medical team every year. Remember to keep moving after you finish. Here’s a video from our Medical Director with more to help you prevent EAC:
Get your bling…
Next, grab your much-deserved medal from Members Cooperative Credit Union volunteers near the Jamar pedestrian bridge that crosses over the finish area. More water is available in the same area, followed by Heatsheets and your official finisher shirt. Don’t forget to grab your free drink ticket! Keep moving and you’ll find Powerade, the official sports drink of Grandma’s Marathon, and the previously mentioned ‘blister tent.’
Say Cheese & refuel…
Our finish area chute takes a slight left into a parking lot near the lighthouse on Duluth’s pier. Visit MarathonFoto for official photography opportunities and you’ll enter what we call the ‘Runner Recovery Area.’ You can retrieve your gear bag in this lot, and replenish with offerings from a variety of Grandma’s Marathon sponsors. Options this year will include:
- Dasani Water and other beverage options from Coca-Cola
- Country Hearth Breads bagels
- Old Home Foods Yogurt and Natural Peanut Butter
- Kemps Chocolate Milk, proven to be a top post-race replenisher!
- Old Dutch potato chips, great to rebuild sodium and potassium
- Clif Bar mini-bars
- College Inn Chicken Broth from Super One Foods, another (liquid) sodium replenisher
- Orange juice, bananas and other fresh fruit
Join the sustainability efforts…
*New this year, keep an eye out for our Green Stations, where you can drop anything you want to dispose of, and our crew will compost, recycle or reuse it if possible. It’s the next step in our sustainability initiative to work towards a zero waste event!
Moving on to recovery mode…
As you leave the runners’ area, you’ll find the Massage tent in the Grandma’s Restaurant parking lot. Depending on conditions, many runners look forward to a dip in Lake Superior after their run (and swear by the healing effect of our great lake’s sacred water!) Make your way toward the Activity lot and you’ll see Nature’s Gem CBD for another form of natural pain relief, and Driscoll’s Berry Truck, offering free berry treats including soft serve!
Time to celebrate…
In our activity lot this year, the Green Mill truck will be back, as well as Duluth Coffee Company, the official coffee of Grandma’s Marathon. Live music entertainment is free and open to the public until 5 p.m. This year’s afternoon lineup includes Rock-a-Billy Revue, Laura Velvet, and headliner Chris Kroeze from last season’s “The Voice.” Redeem your drink ticket for anything on the menu from major sponsors, Superior Beverages and Coca-Cola:
- Craft beers from O’Dells and Alaskan breweries
- Domestic beers and cider from Anheuser-Busch
- Bud Light Lime-a-Rita or Straw-ber-ita
- Coca-cola products or Monster Energy Drink
- Barefoot Wine products
Visit the RE/MAX Results tent for your official result or if you have questions, visit our information booth in the middle of the activity area. Return shuttles, parking, and your best exit out of Canal Park is via the slip bridge back to the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.
When you’re feeling comfortable and recovered, join us for the big party on Saturday night! The official “Rock The Big Top” post-race celebration opens at 7 p.m., the cover is only $10, and all the refreshments are just five dollars. The party starts with local favorites, Laura Velvet, followed by Chris Kroeze. Closing the celebration with a high-energy finale that you don’t want to miss is Cowboy Mouth, whose reputation precedes them as one of the most lively and fun rock bands you’ll ever see live – a perfect way to wrap up your race day!
