MEN’S EVENT RECORD HOLDER

Dominic Ondoro set the Grandma’s Marathon men’s event record in 2014 with a time of 2:09:06, breaking the longtime mark of Dick Beardsley that had stood since 1981.

It was just the second-ever US marathon for the Kenya native, who finished almost three full minutes ahead of the runner-up.

Beardsley, who is now part of the event’s broadcast team, was among the first at the finish line to greet and congratulate Ondoro. The Kenyan returned to Duluth in 2022 and nearly beat his own record, running to a second career Grandma’s Marathon win in a time of 2:09:34.

Ondoro also owns the event record at the Twin Cities Marathon, where he is a four-time champion.

WOMEN’S EVENT RECORD HOLDER

Kellyn Taylor set the Grandma’s Marathon women’s event record in 2018 with a time of 2:24:28, breaking the previous mark by more than two minutes.

It was, at the time, a personal-best by more than four minutes for Taylor and the seventh-fastest marathon in history for an American woman.

A native of Sussex, Wis., Taylor narrowly missed making the 2016 US Olympic Team by finishing fourth in the 10,000m. She also more recently placed eighth at the 2020 Olympic Trials in the marathon.

Taylor is a mom to her daughter Kylyn, and she also became certified in 2016 to become a firefighter when she’s finished with her running career.

NON-BINARY EVENT RECORD HOLDER

Steven Bugarin set the Grandma’s Marathon non-binary event record in 2023 with a time of 2:50:29, breaking the mark set one year prior by Jake Fedorowski.

Bugarin, from Hammond, Ind., broke Fedorowski’s existing mark by more than a half hour, that after the non-binary category was first introduced to Grandma’s Marathon as an official category in 2022.

The category grew from two participants in its first year to 10 in its second, and Bugarin was also the first non-binary winner to receive prize money at Grandma’s Marathon.

NOTE: Fedorowski actually played a significant role in helping Grandma’s Marathon launch its official non-binary category, working and communicating with our staff regularly ahead of the 2022 event.

MEN’S WHEELCHAIR EVENT RECORD HOLDER

Aaron Pike returned to Duluth in 2022 and not only won his fourth Grandma’s Marathon men’s wheelchair title, he did so by beating his own standing event record.

Having pushed to a time of 1:20:59 en route to the 2019 title, Pike this time finished nearly a minute better with a time of 1:20:02 to beat out the previous year’s champion Johnboy Smith by only three seconds.

Pike now not only owns the overall event record but also both course bests, having turned in the fastest time on both the traditional Superior Street course and the modified Michigan Street course (used from 2018-2021).

Pike’s four wins rank him third among all-time men’s wheelchair racers, trailing only the eight titles won by Paul van Winkel and the seven won by Saul Mendoza.

WOMEN’S WHEELCHAIR EVENT RECORD HOLDER

After beating the existing event record by more than six minutes in 2019, Susannah Scaroni returned to Duluth in 2022 to again set a new all-time best in stunning fashion.

Scaroni’s time of 1:27:31 was more than three minutes faster than her mark three years prior, again leaving no doubt about who is the top women’s wheeler in Grandma’s Marathon history.

Scaroni’s time was also a new world best time, beating Manuela Schar’s time of 1:28:17 in the 2017 Boston Marathon, but it won’t be certified as an official world record because Grandma’s Marathon has a point-to-point racecourse with an elevation drop above the allowed standard.

The win is Scaroni’s fourth all-time at Grandma’s Marathon, pulling her closer to Tami Oothoudt (10), Amanda McGrory (8), and Candace Cable (7) in terms of all-time wins in Duluth.
