Let’s be honest, for most of us, winter running can be challenging. I would take 90 degrees and humid over cold and snowy any day. Unfortunately for me, Grandma’s training usually starts in January or February- the chilliest months. Over the years I’ve discovered some ways to survive winter running and make it more fun.
Winter running can be daunting because of all the gear it requires. I’ve found that it doesn’t have to be expensive and you probably own a lot of it already. The two things I would absolutely recommend investing in are a reflective vest and handheld flashlights. Shorter days mean running in the dark more and reflective gear is an absolute necessity. I like to use Craft mittens but cheap knit gloves or mittens work too. My go-to pants are fleece lined leggings from Target for $15. I also like to wear Smart Wool socks on extra cold days. I typically get hot in a hat so I opt for a fleece headband and a neck gator. I do own a Craft running jacket but most days I will wear one or two long sleeve running shirts and an old sweatshirt. It’s tricky to layer in the winter and know just how warm to dress- my best tip is you should feel cold for the first half mile to full mile. I try to avoid running outside if it has recently snowed or is icy since it changes my gait but if you’re feeling brave, I would recommend buying a pair of spikes before taking on the snow and ice.
In addition to disliking running in the snow, I also dislike running on the treadmill- can’t win right? My saving grace in the winter has been the domed Braemar Field in Edina. I highly recommend finding a public indoor track. While it’s still not as fun or pretty as running outside, it’s much warmer and much better than the treadmill (in my opinion).
My last tip for winter running is sign up for a race. Personally, motivation is at an all time low when it’s cold and dark outside. Signing up for a fun winter race gives me a short term goal to look forward to.
Best of luck to everyone taking on the snowy roads this year- looking forward to warmer days ahead!

Favorite Grandma’s Marathon Memory: Grandma’s weekend has been a family tradition since before I was born. It’s impossible to pick a favorite memory because every year has its own special little moments. I’ve been able to experience Grandma’s weekend as a volunteer, spectator, runner, and even a mascot at the Whipper Snapper Race. Every “position” I’ve had during Grandma’s has been equally amazing and rewarding.
Song that must be on your running playlist: Anything by Knock2 or ISOxo! My current favorite is Crank the Base, Play the Muzic by Knock2.
Reason you absolutely won’t run outside: I despise winter running and tend to do most of my runs at an indoor track if there’s fresh snow or ice
Favorite pre-race meal: Fried rice and potbelly ham sandwich
Favorite post-race beverage: Always a crispy Coke, it tends to be the only thing on my mind for the last few miles of a marathon
2026 running goal: BQ (hopefully on the Grandma’s course) and stay injury free!
Advice to other runners: Go to a group shakeout run the weekend of Grandma’s! I went to my first one this past year and met some new friends who I ended up spotting at the marathon start line. It was a super fun way to meet new people and feel connected!
