Garry Bjorklund won the inaugural Grandma’s Marathon in 1977 and was again the champion in 1980.
While that may be his local claim to fame, the Duluth area native also represented the United States in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, placing 13th in the 10,000m.
In 1991, the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon was created to recognize his lifelong contributions to running throughout the area and state of Minnesota.
The race has now grown to become one of the largest half marathons in the country, welcoming approximately 10,000 participants each year to the shores of Lake Superior.
2021 Cancellation Contingency Plan
If COVID-19 conditions do not improve, there’s a chance we will have to cancel the in-person version of the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon for the second year in a row.
If that happens, all participants registered for an in-person race will be automatically switched to the virtual option and receive new instructions for completing their race.
Those registrants will also receive a 40% discount that can be used (3) times over the next (5) years on any Grandma’s Marathon weekend race.
NOTE: Participants registered for a 2021 virtual race DO NOT qualify for the cancellation discount plan.
