Winter Running — Finding a Love of Trails in the Cold

Winter can cause many people to take the running indoors. The allure of a warm treadmill or indoor track runs keep many training inside during these cold dark months. However, if one is willing to brave the elements, winter can be an incredible time to run, especially on the trails. Trails offer a little more security in the winter. They are often less slippery than roads, not quite as busy, and there’s so much to see.

Fortunately, we live in a trail mecca! No matter the season there are some beautiful,  easily accessible areas to run, right here in the Twin Ports area. Here are some trail ideas to keep you running  throughout these snowy months.

Duluth has several breathtaking parks that offer fantastic trail running opportunities. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, check out these:

All of these parks are all a short drive from Canal Park and all offer amazing running opportunities.  They all have spectacular views, hilly terrain, and a variety of challenges. There are loops and various trails at each park, sonyou an run longer or shorter depending on your needs. The trails are usually well packed by snowshoes — just make sure to stay off the ski trails.

Chester and Hartley connect with the Superior Hiking Trail as well if you’re looking too string together a longer run.

If you are just entering the winter trail running world and prefer less technical terrain you have several options as well.

Minnesota Point, at the end of Park Point, is a gorgeous area with views of the lake, towering pines, and fantastic old buildings. The entire trail is less than 5 miles out and back.

Bear Creek Trail is another wonderful option. It’s  multiuse trail on the outskirts of Superior on Highway 53.  It has rolling hills and many bridges over the various creeks and low areas. The trail connects with Wisconsin Point after a 2.25 miles, and you can either continue across the road and tack on another half a mile or so (this section is under construction), turn around and head back, or run Wisconsin Point for added miles.

I hope you’re able to get out and enjoy all that winter has to bring. Take in all the crisp, clean beauty that this season has to offer, and find some peace out on the trail.

Thank you for your support of Grandma's Marathon, and we look forward to seeing you in June 2023!
