Three Years at Grandma’s, Eleven Marathons In: Still Chasing Boston, Still Fighting for Redemption

Grandma’s Marathon isn’t just a race. It’s a place where everyone belongs. As a Deaf marathoner, I’ve experienced firsthand how powerful true inclusion can be. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or soaking in the weekend, every story matters. Here’s mine.

They say the third time’s the charm and at my third Grandma’s Marathon, it truly was. This was my 11th marathon and I was chasing a Boston Qualifier again after just missing it in Ogden, Utah a month earlier. Though I missed the BQ by only one minute, that didn’t take away my pride in giving it my all.

Grandma’s Marathon is more than a race; it’s a community that welcomes runners from all walks of life. This year, I was deeply touched by the first-ever Deaf & Hard of Hearing booth at the expo. They even prepared a special “Deaf Runner” bib for us, making me feel seen and supported.

Reconnecting with old friends, Deaf and hearing and meeting new ones reminded me how Grandma’s Marathon brings people together in the best ways. I even had the chance to meet Olympic marathoner Dakotah Popehn, who was genuinely curious about ASL and eager to learn. That moment was a beautiful example of the inclusive spirit that makes Grandma’s so special.

Race day was tough. Heat, humidity, and cramps challenged me, but I pushed through to the finish. Missing Boston by one minute was frustrating, but it fueled a fire in me and strengthened my determination to come back stronger at the next marathon I will sign up for. I’m confident I will get that BQ.

Grandma’s Marathon isn’t just about racing fast; it’s about belonging, perseverance, and celebrating every runner’s journey. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or running your first race, Deaf or hearing, this race welcomes you with open arms.

As a proud Deaf marathoner, I can say with confidence: Grandma’s is for everybody. Come experience it for yourself. I hope to see you in Duluth next year for the 50th Anniversary!

Until next time,

Favorite Grandma’s Marathon Memory: I got 6 Deaf Runners to join me in the journey last June! It was fabulous and made wonderful memories that are unforgettable!

A song that must be on your running playlist: As I am a deaf runner, I do not have the capability to hear music like the others! My “music” is the views of outdoor nature.

Reason you absolutely won’t run outside:
Lighting. Don’t know where the sound is coming from!

Favorite post-race beverage: Just give me a beer, all I want is to interact with friends and celebrate the moment together! 🙂

Three words to describe your training, racing, or life: Earn Your Spot.
